When crafting your United States travel itinerary, don’t overlook the charm of Oklahoma. This underrated state holds a trove of treasures, from picturesque rural villages to quaint small cities and captivating natural attractions. Embark on a journey through our guide to the “Amazing Places to Visit in Oklahoma” and uncover the hidden gems that make this state a must-explore destination for any traveler.

Located in the South Central United States, Oklahoma borders Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado. Its diverse geography includes mountains, canyons, mesas, plains, and forests, making it one of the most varied states in the nation. With over fifty state and national parks, it’s no surprise that outdoor enthusiasts flock to Oklahoma for its incredible landscapes.

Beavers Bend State Park is a popular destination for water sports and leisure activities, while the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge is known for its breathtaking wildlife and scenery. The Great Salt Plains is a unique salt landscape that is worth a visit, and a road trip down Historic Route 66 will take you through some of Oklahoma’s most picturesque rural areas and classic American landmarks.

Oklahoma City, the state capital, is a vibrant city with exciting neighborhoods, cool art galleries, and major historic monuments. Tulsa, known as the “Oil Capital of the World,” is also a must-see city with a rich history and culture.

For those interested in Native American heritage, Oklahoma has a rich history and culture, with many fascinating Wild West attractions that showcase a vibrant cowboy culture. Visit college towns like Norman and Stillwater, or the city of Lawton, home to Fort Sill and the Comanche National Museum.

Don’t miss out on the chance to explore Oklahoma’s legendary beauty in the great outdoors, and experience the unique charm of this underrated state.

10. Great Salt Plains State Park

Located in the northern part of Oklahoma, Great Salt Plains State Park is right on the beaches of the picturesque, shallow, and salty lake of the same name. The lovely plains of glittering salt are all that is left of a once immense ancient ocean, and they give the area its name.

The endless salt flats are breathtaking, but that’s not all the state park has to offer. You can go mountain biking or hiking, or you can go swimming or boating on the lake, or you can go fishing or bird watching.

To my knowledge, selenite crystals can only be mined in the Great Salt Plains State Park. Tourists go to the state park from April to October in search of the hourglass-shaped crystals and to take advantage of the area’s scenic vistas and recreational opportunities.

Natural Falls State Park is located in the northwest part of Missouri, not too far from the Arkansas border, and is surrounded by the beautiful Ozark Highlands. It has beautiful trees, animals, and plants, but its central waterfall is what draws visitors.

Dripping Springs Falls is a beautiful 75-foot (23-meter) waterfall that plunks down a rocky ledge and into a calm pool. Tucked away in a woodland valley, the falls are best seen from one of two observation platforms, from where one may get stunning photographs of the spectacular natural phenomenon.

The waterfall is the most popular attraction at this state park, but the five cosy yurts are also popular for overnight stays and picnics. In addition to the beautiful forest route, guests may enjoy a basketball court and a volleyball court.

8. Chickasaw National Recreation Area

The Chickasaw National Recreation Area, located just outside the tiny city of Sulphur in south-central Oklahoma, is a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts. Nestled in the Arbuckle Mountains’ foothills, this area is replete with natural wonders including woods, lakes, and waterfalls, as well as springs and streams.

There are many opportunities for fishing, swimming, and boating on the park’s many scenic waterways, which make up more than a quarter of the park’s total area. Lake of the Arbuckles is the biggest lake and offers guests beautiful picnic areas and camping.

In spite of the water’s centrality to the park’s identity, exploring the area’s lush woodlands and discovering its varied wildlife and flora is a wonderful way to spend a day out of the water. Learn everything about the wildlife and ecosystems of the Chickasaw National Recreation Area at the Travertine Nature Center, which has both displays and live workshops.

Lawton, Oklahoma’s fifth-largest city, is located in the middle of the state’s vast grasslands and plains, with only the Wichita Mountains to the north as a point of relief. Several intriguing museums may be found in this area, making it a prime destination for anyone interested in the Great Plains’ rich cultural heritage.

The Museum of the Great Plains has educational and engaging displays about the region’s history, including archaeological relics, a recreated trading post, and more. And if you want to learn more about the Comanche people and their history, head on over to the Comanche National Museum and Cultural Center. Meanwhile, the Fort Sill Museum is home to a wide variety of restored structures from different time periods.

Lawton is known for its abundance of parks and outdoor leisure spaces, in addition to its wonderful public museums. Even while swimming and boating are popular activities, a trip to Wichita isn’t complete unless you spend some time in the rugged Wichita Mountains, surrounded by the beautiful environment that calls it home.

6. Bartlesville

Bartlesville is positioned on the Caney River, about 70 kilometres (45 miles) north of Tulsa and close to the state line with Kansas. Phillips Petroleum Company, which has been a major force in the city since oil was found there in 1905 and currently maintains substantial local headquarters and a sizable local workforce, has controlled much of city life.

The affluent company has donated money over the years to construct a lot of the city’s best museums and most aesthetically pleasing structures. Woolaroc, a museum and wildlife preserve, stands head and shoulders above the others due to its enormous art collection and wide variety of animals, including bison, elk, and zebra.

Bartlesville is also notable for being the location of Frank Lloyd Wright’s lone skyscraper design. Price Tower, which soars to a height of 67 metres (almost 220 feet), is a popular venue for art shows and other special events. The city has a number of noteworthy cultural events and festivals throughout the year, including a vintage automobile exhibition that attracts a large and enthusiastic audience.

Beavers Bend State Park, located in Oklahoma’s beautiful southeast, is a top attraction and one of the state’s most visited parks. The picturesque Broken Bow Lake may be found inside this park, which was founded in 1937 and is named for a snaking section of the otherwise gorgeous Mountain Fork River.

The park is nestled among gently undulating hills and low-lying mountains, and it has breathtaking vistas and scenery, with lush woods enveloping its lakeshores and riverbanks. There are several hiking routes and mountain bike tracks that weave through the woods, making this rough and rustic landscape a joy to explore.

Fishing, swimming, and canoeing are just a few of the many popular outdoor pursuits that may be enjoyed on and around the area’s flowing river and beautiful lake. Visitors enjoy archery, mini-golf, and tennis in the park’s nature centre, and many prefer to spend the night at the campground or in one of the park’s cosy cottages.

4. Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge

The lovely and wild Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge covers a huge area of southwest Oklahoma and is located just to the north of Lawton. The park was established in 1901 and has since helped to protect innumerable types of flora and fauna.

Extremely mountainous, it has a wide variety of landscapes, from flower-filled meadows and woodlands to deep ravines and wide valleys. There are 13 man-made lakes within its borders, as well as several picturesque hiking paths and rock climbing routes. Aside from being a great area to camp out and cast a line, it’s also a great spot to see birds and other animals.

More than half of the park is undeveloped and protected for its biodiversity. The stunning bison population has grown to over 650 and can now be seen by guests on guided excursions with elks, armadillos, otters, and other native wildlife.

Route 66, one of the most famous and beloved highways in the United States, stretches from Chicago to Santa Monica. Eight states and 3,940 kilometres later, the ‘Mother Road’ reaches its western terminus in Oklahoma, which also has one of its longest portions.

Tulsa and Oklahoma City are two of the state’s most visited cities, and they’re only two stops along Historic Route 66, a popular route for tourists. More than that, it travels through some really iconic American scenery, including expansive farmlands, little towns, and rolling cornfields.

Beautiful museums and monuments honouring the historic highway may be seen throughout Oklahoma. The National Route 66 Museum in Elk City, for example, explores the lives of those who worked and travelled along the historic highway. In contrast, the nearly mythological Mother Road is the central focus of Clinton, Oklahoma’s Route 66 Museum.

2. Tulsa

Tulsa, Oklahoma, is the state’s second-largest city and calls itself the “Oil Capital of the World.” It is located in northeast Oklahoma, between the Great Plains and the foothills of the Ozark Mountains. There are many major corporations and energy firms headquartered there, but the city also has several beautiful landmarks and intriguing tourist spots.

On the banks of the Arkansas River, the city’s glittering downtown is home to gleaming corporate headquarters among an amazing collection of magnificent art deco structures. In addition to its two world-class art museums, the city also has a vibrant arts and cultural scene for tourists to explore. The city is home to some of the world’s finest ballet, opera, and theatrical theatres.

Tulsa’s thriving nightlife and music culture may be attributed in part to the city’s abundance of prosperous enterprises. In addition, there are many interesting stops along Historic Route 66 and plenty of parks and other green areas to relax in.

Oklahoma City, located in the geographical centre of the state, serves as more than just the administrative and population hub for the state. OKC, as it is often known, is a sprawling metropolis on the banks of the Oklahoma River that attracts millions of people each year.

It’s worth getting out of downtown to see the beautiful Museum of Art and the moving Oklahoma City National Memorial, among other attractions. Exquisite art galleries, Art Deco architecture, and boutiques may be found on the Paseo, a historic artists’ colony, while “Little Saigon” is teeming with outstanding Asian restaurants and stores.

Frontier City, OKC’s family-friendly theme park, has thrilling rides and attractions that transport visitors to the Wild West, in addition to the city’s many historical, cultural, and architectural landmarks.
