Located in the northern part of Oklahoma, Great Salt Plains State Park is right on the beaches of the picturesque, shallow, and salty lake of the same name. The lovely plains of glittering salt are all that is left of a once immense ancient ocean, and they give the area its name.
The endless salt flats are breathtaking, but that’s not all the state park has to offer. You can go mountain biking or hiking, or you can go swimming or boating on the lake, or you can go fishing or bird watching.
To my knowledge, selenite crystals can only be mined in the Great Salt Plains State Park. Tourists go to the state park from April to October in search of the hourglass-shaped crystals and to take advantage of the area’s scenic vistas and recreational opportunities.

The lovely and wild Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge covers a huge area of southwest Oklahoma and is located just to the north of Lawton. The park was established in 1901 and has since helped to protect innumerable types of flora and fauna.
Extremely mountainous, it has a wide variety of landscapes, from flower-filled meadows and woodlands to deep ravines and wide valleys. There are 13 man-made lakes within its borders, as well as several picturesque hiking paths and rock climbing routes. Aside from being a great area to camp out and cast a line, it’s also a great spot to see birds and other animals.
More than half of the park is undeveloped and protected for its biodiversity. The stunning bison population has grown to over 650 and can now be seen by guests on guided excursions with elks, armadillos, otters, and other native wildlife.
