10 Best Places to Visit in Greece

by Vasilis Spiros

Greece is one of Europe’s most popular tourist destinations due to its many historical sites, picturesque towns, beautiful beaches, delicious food, and welcoming locals. But the beauty of this site is what draws visitors in the first place. The numerous islands that dot the waters around the Greek peninsula are often the site of such splendor. They each have their own unique attractions, whether they are natural beauty, cultural landmarks, exciting nightlife, or other types of entertainment.

Numerous of them may be discovered. From the western Ionian islands like Kefalonia and Corfu to the Aegean Sea with its many beautiful islands like Mykonos, Santorini, Kos, and Rhodes. There’s also Crete, in the south, which was home to the pre-Hellenic Minoan civilisation. When you return to the mainland, you will find breathtaking natural beauty around every corner. The ancient site of Delphi, the monastic settlement of Meteora, and, of course, the city of Athens, home of the renowned Parthenon. Listed below are some of Greece’s top attractions:

10. Cape Sounion

Cape Sounion, at the southernmost point of the Attica peninsula, is most well-known as the location of the remnants of an ancient Greek temple dedicated to Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea.

Resting on a promontory, the ocean surrounds the site on three sides. Sunset over the Aegean Sea, as seen from the ruins, is a sought-after sight, making the place a popular day-trip destination for travelers from Athens.

9. Thessaloniki

In addition to being the capital of the Macedonian region in northern Greece, Thessaloniki is the second-largest city in all of Greece. This city is the cultural epicenter of Greece, hosting several festivals, social gatherings, and a vibrant nightlife.

Thessaloniki’s ancient downtown and business district are home to a wide variety of tourist attractions, from the city’s Byzantine walls and White Tower to the Turkish baths, vibrant food markets, and museums and art galleries. There is no city in the world like Thessaloniki at night. Thessaloniki has a wide variety of restaurants, bars, clubs, and other places to have fun.

8. Zagori

The northern Greek area of Zagori is a sight to see because of its stunning geography and two national parks. Its rocky mountains and thick forests are cut by raging rivers, and its traditional villages are sprinkled with great stone manors from the late 18th century.

Hiking the many trails that link the towns is the best way to see the landscape. The spectacular Vkos Gorge is the most approachable and rewarding destination.

7. Halkidiki

The Halkidiki peninsula, shaped like a trident and located close to Thessaloniki, is known for its beautiful beaches. Roughly speaking, the following describes the three distinct peninsulas: There is nightlife in Kassandra, beaches in Sithonia, and monks in Athos.

Kassandra, being closer to Thessaloniki, is more developed, but Sithonia, being more remote, offers campsites, secret coves, and clean seas. Many visitors from Greece and Eastern Europe flock to both destinations. Mount Athos is a monastic community that claims most of the easternmost peninsula as its own. You have to take a boat to get there, and only male pilgrims are allowed inside.

6. Peloponnese

The Peloponnese was formerly known as Morea, which means mulberry leaf, due to its resemblance to a big leaf. The Peloponnese is a broad peninsula linked to the mainland by the Rio-Antirrio bridge, and it can be found in the most southern part of both Europe and Greece.

The Peloponnese’s long history is reflected in the region’s many relics, which include classical Greek temples, Venetian strongholds, Byzantine churches, and Mycenaean mansions. Olympia, the site of the first Olympic Games named after Zeus, is among these historic sites.

5. Delphi

Delphi is the most visited ancient monument in Greece after the Acropolis in Athens. In ancient times, the ancient Greeks considered the city of Delphi, situated approximately 2.5 hours outside of Athens on the foothills of the majestic Mount Parnassus, to be the very center of the world. Delphi, which was devoted to Apollo, was a significant place of divination.

People from many walks of life, including farmers, lovers, and politicians, visit this holy site in search of guidance. The Ancient Pythian Games took place at the theater and hippodrome that still stand at Delphi, along with other important remains like the Temple of Apollo and the Athenian Treasury.

4. Meteora

Overlooking the towns of Kalambaka and Kastraki on the north central mainland of Greece are stunning cliffs that soar more than 1,200 feet (366 meters) into the air, earning them the Greek name meteora, which means “suspended in the air.”

As inspiring as they are on their own, these cliffs are elevated to a higher level by the presence of ancient monasteries along their peaks. The monasteries of Meteora date back to the 14th and 16th centuries, when monks seeking seclusion and refuge from religious persecution constructed them.

3. Crete

Crete, the biggest of the Greek islands, has a vast, varied terrain with beautiful coastal scenery, steep mountains, and rolling farmland studded with olive trees.

The suburbs of the big cities were calm communities with outdoor cafes. Crete is so ancient that it still has archaeological remnants from the different cultures that have lived there throughout the years.

2. Athens

Athens has been continuously inhabited for almost 3,000 years, earning it the reputation as the origin of Western civilisation and democracy. The city is an overwhelming jumble of old and new. The Acropolis, Parthenon, Ancient Agora, and Theatre of Dionysos are just a handful of the many well-known structures and ruins in Athens.

The city of Athens, however, has much more to offer than its archaeological sites. This city is a major hub for commerce, culture, and entertainment.

1. Greek Islands

A large number of people visit the Greek islands every year because of their beauty and diversity. They might first be overwhelmed by the more than 2,000 islands available to them. The Greek islands are home to a plethora of attractions, from vibrant ports to active volcanoes and historic ruins.

Santorini, a Cycladic island, is one of the most beautiful sites in Greece. Mykonos, a Cycladic island, has a unique combination of contemporary, global culture and classic, quaint architecture, such as its whitewashed homes and winding lanes. Rhodes is the biggest and capital island of the Dodecanese archipelago in the Aegean Sea, not far from the coast of Turkey. Corfu, the largest and northernmost of Greece’s Ionian Islands, has been influenced culturally and aesthetically by many different countries throughout the centuries. This is especially true of the Venetians and the British.
