Located in the heart of London, the Sofitel St. James is a luxurious hotel that offers peace of mind.
As we drew near the grand Sofitel St. James hotel off Pall Mall in St. James, we couldn’t help but pause for a long, admiring look at the building’s gorgeous Grade II-listed neoclassical façade.
The building, operated by AccorHotels, is stunning. It was finished in 1923 after being planned by E. Keynes Purchase and Durward Brown. Before being purchased by a French hotel chain and transformed into a luxurious hotel, it served the community for many years as a bank.
After entering through the massive gateway, you will find yourself on white and black marble flooring decorated with an elaborate Persian carpet, dark red armchairs, dark wood furniture, and attractive pottery and flowers.
With its green cushioned background, sky-high ceilings, and black marble reception desk, pleasure is suggested to be a serious business done with accuracy.
The staff is quite helpful, and as it is a French hotel, you will be welcomed in both French and English. There is no hassle with checking in, and our things were delivered to our rooms without us having to ask. A few minutes later, a message appeared on our WhatsApp inquiring whether or not we were satisfied with our rooms.
You can take a tour of the hotel here.
Who for?
The Sofitel St. James is a wonderful place to stay for everybody. You may wish to extend your visit thanks to the hotel’s comfortable family suites, functional conference spaces, and enticing eating and drinking options.
Accommodation
The rooms are elegant and comforting, with a range of pastel colors from pink to blue. Room 294 was all green, from the headboard to the tartan carpet to the wonderful lime green designer chair that we wanted to steal along with the Hermès bath products.
You’ll find a Smeg kettle, an art deco touch, and a Nespresso machine in between the standard fare of a fully stocked minibar and pop art on the walls and shelves.
There is a spacious, comfortable bed with three different kinds of pillows and fresh sheets, as well as a walk-in shower, plush towels, a bathrobe, and a set of slippers in the attached bathroom.
We like the super-quiet air conditioning, the reading lamps above the bed, and the handy radio, and we were pleased to find an iPod docking station, a hairdryer, and a television in our rooms. Numerous outlets, including USB ports, are conveniently placed for your comfort.
The turndown service includes two complementary glass bottles of water and a teacup with a chamomile flower teabag to help you relax before bed.
Given that I had brought my laptop with me, the desk and chair were really welcome.
Food and Drink
Wild Honey St. James is a beautiful restaurant decorated by Jim Hamilton with blue velvet banquettes and tanned leather seats. Artwork and a chandelier provide ambient illumination.
Breakfast is served in a refined atmosphere. Freshly squeezed juices, fruits, French pastries, cereals, cheeses, and yoghurts are laid out on a buffet in the bar.
Poached eggs, omelettes, exotic spicy Akari eggs, pancakes, oatmeal, waffles, and a full English are all available as part of the cooked breakfast menu.
In addition to serving breakfast, Wild Honey St. James is open for lunch and dinner as well. Simon Woodrow, the head chef, and Chef Anthony Demetre, an assistant chef, have collaborated to develop a menu of largely French classics.
The Rose Lounge, decorated in soft pink, is a charming setting for afternoon tea. The French onion soup, Croque Monsieur, and the quiche with celeriac, truffles, and bacon set this tea apart from the norm. However, you can also choose a more classic afternoon tea with a selection of freshly baked scones, finger sandwiches, and pastries.
