Step inside the grand and elegant Royal Opera House, situated in the heart of London’s cultural district, Covent Garden. This world-renowned performing arts venue has been captivating audiences for over 250 years, earning its place among the most iconic and celebrated theaters in the world. Recently, I had the pleasure of experiencing this extraordinary venue for myself, and it was truly unforgettable.
Discovering the Opulence of the Royal Opera House:
As I approached the Royal Opera House, the sight of its magnificent neoclassical façade, adorned with ornate pillars and a pediment, left me awestruck. Originally built in 1732 as the Theatre Royal, the venue underwent several renovations and expansions over time.
The current building, designed by Edward Middleton Barry, was completed in 1858 and comprises various theaters, including the Main Auditorium, the Linbury Theatre, and the Clore Studio.

Upon entering the Main Auditorium, I was immediately struck by its opulence and beauty. The traditional Italian horseshoe-shaped auditorium features plush red velvet seats, a breathtaking ceiling adorned with gold leaf and frescoes, and a dazzling chandelier that sparkles above the stage.

During my visit, I was fortunate enough to witness a performance of the Royal Ballet’s production of “The Sleeping Beauty.” The dancers’ skill and artistry left me in awe.

Apart from the Main Auditorium, the Royal Opera House also boasts several other performance spaces, such as the intimate Linbury Theatre, which hosts a range of productions, including dance, theater, and opera.

Behind-the-Scenes at the Royal Opera House:
One of the highlights of my visit was the chance to explore the backstage areas, where I was taken on a guided tour of the costume and wardrobe department. I marveled at the incredible detail and craftsmanship that goes into creating the costumes for the Royal Ballet and the Royal Opera.
I also got to see the set and prop designers and carpenters hard at work in the production workshops, creating the elaborate and intricate sets and props that bring the productions to life.
Dining in Style:
And let’s not forget about the Amphitheatre Restaurant, located on the third floor of the building, offering stunning views of Covent Garden. I had the pleasure of dining there and enjoyed a variety of sophisticated dishes with impeccable service.
