Restaurant Review: Pivot by Mark Greenaway, Covent Garden, London

by Amelia Oliver

A look at Pivot, a restaurant by Mark Greenaway, and their Sunday roast

When it comes to dining options, Covent Garden has you covered. And now there’s Pivot by Mark Greenaway, where you can relax and enjoy some fine British cuisine, including a delicious Sunday roast. The flooring and tables are dark wood, while the walls are a burnt orange that is livened up with unique artwork.

Mark Greenaway, a native Scotsman, said that he had never been to a restaurant until he started his first job in culinary school. Nonetheless, he has reached remarkable heights, having opened his first restaurant, the award-winning Restaurant Mark Greenaway, in 2013 and his second, Grazing by Mark Greenaway, in 2017. The city of Edinburgh is home to both. He has been featured on BBC1’s Saturday Kitchen Live in the documentary series The Great British Menu.

The year 2021 saw the debut of his newest business, Pivot. The restaurant is situated on the third level of a lovely five-story townhouse on Henrietta Street (3Henrietta St) and has a modest, cozy capacity (about 20 covers) with views over the lively central area of Covent Garden. The monthly menu puts a contemporary spin on traditional British cuisine.

Nonetheless, we came over to sample Mark Greenaways’ famous Sunday roast.

The Sunday Roast

There are just three main courses available on Sunday, all variations on the roast. Beef or lamb roast, stuffed cod fillet, baked eggplant, etc. Yorkshire puds, gravy, and roast potatoes round out the meal.

Only two of us ordered the lamb, but we both went back for seconds. The beef was tender, the potatoes were perfectly crisp on the exterior and soft on the inside, and the Yorkshire puddings were the cherry on top. The cooked fish fillet with parsley butter sauce was what I ended up ordering. (entrees are priced at £21.)

You can choose between banana Pavlova (£7.00) or sticky toffee pudding (£7.00).

Verdict

Sunday roast is the ultimate British comfort dish. Mark Greenaway elevates the Sunday roast to a new level of deliciousness by adding complexity, outstanding textures, and flavors.
